Landscape lighting ยท Burlington

Landscape lighting in Burlington. Two views to design: the street and the lake.

Roseland, Shoreacres, Tyandaga and the Lakeshore corridor. Burlington's best properties tend to face something (the lake, the escarpment or a ravine), so the rear elevation carries as much weight as the front.

The local condition

Rear elevations that are the real front.

On a Shoreacres or Roseland property, the side of the house the family lives on faces away from the street. The patio, the pool and the view are all at the back, yet it's easy to treat the rear yard as a few path lights.

We design both elevations as compositions in their own right. The street side handles arrival and curb appeal; the lake or ravine side handles how the property is used every evening from May to October.

The ravine and escarpment-edge lots bring a different problem: grade. Terraced properties need light that makes every level change readable without a fixture visible from the terrace below.

Designing for grade

Four rules on a terraced property.

  • i.

    Every level change gets light.

Steps, retaining wall transitions and terrace edges are lit so the change reads from above and below, recessed into risers or cross-lit from a low, shielded source.

    Recessed or cross-lit
  • ii.

    Aim so nothing glares upward.

A fixture that is discreet from the upper level can shine straight into the eyes of someone on the terrace below. We check sightlines from every level.

    Checked from each terrace
  • iii.

    Use the retaining walls.

Stone walls grazed from close in read as texture and quietly light the terrace above without a visible source.

    Walls as fixtures
  • iv.

    Zone by terrace.

Each level is used differently, so the lower garden can sit low while the entertaining terrace comes up.

Burlington questions

Answered plainly.

How much does landscape lighting cost in Burlington?

In Burlington the rear elevation often accounts for half the fixtures, so it's worth pricing the whole property rather than just the front. A focused front-of-house design with 10 to 20 brass fixtures runs $3,000 to $5,500. A fully designed property with 20 to 35 fixtures runs $5,500 to $11,000, where most homes land. Lake-facing properties with pools, terracing and scene control run $11,000 to $21,000, and estate grounds with custom controls start around $28,000. Every range includes fixtures, wire, transformers, trenching, commissioning and warranty.

Do you design the rear yard as well as the front?

Yes, and in Burlington it is often the larger half of the project. The rear elevation, patio, pool and view side are where the household spends its evenings, so we design them as a composition rather than leftover coverage.

Can you work on a steeply graded property?

Yes. Terraced lots need every level change lit, sightlines checked from each terrace so nothing glares up from below, and zones split by level. It takes longer to design and matters more when it's done well.
